504 Plan and IEP Accommodations

Elementary School

Students with disabilities who attend elementary school may need special supports to stay safe, healthy, and be included at school. A 504 Plan helps make sure they are not treated differently and excluded from their peers.

Elementary Accommodations may include:

  • Allowance for the student to carry disability related items on them during school
  • Use of electronics or headset for disability related needs
  • Use of non-electronic ear plugs or noise canceling headphones
  • Alternative pickup and drop off locations
  • A list of school staff trained to help with feeding tubes, ventilators, wheelchairs, etc., what they do, and what training they received
  • Safe lunch and snack plans, including:
    • A list of safe foods
    • Access to water, food, and restrooms
    • Who will bring and store food, formula, and supplies
  • Support for going on all field trips and joining after-school activities (parents/guardians shouldn’t be required to attend)
  • Extra time for tests and assignments
  • Help from teachers to catch up on work and extra time to complete missed work
  • No penalties for absences caused by the medical condition
  • Clear steps for handling symptoms like vomiting or bathroom needs
  • Clear steps for handing emotional disturbance and/or suicidal ideation
  • Advance notice to parents/guardians about special events or classroom activities involving disability related needs
  • Quiet testing location
  • Ability to use fidgets during classes
  • Substitutes will get written instructions about the student’s needs
  • Use of the school elevator
  • Behavioral interventions
  • Assistance with organization

Middle & High School

In middle and high school, students are expected to begin managing some of their own needs when appropriate. Accommodations still focus on keeping them safe, healthy, and included in all school activities.

Middle and High School Accommodations may include:

  • A clear allergy and/or emergency medication plan (EpiPen® details, etc.).
  • A daily schedule for formula, food intake, medication, rest, or other medically prescribed needs.
  • Staff members responsible for and training for anyone assisting with medical devices..
  • Specific places where medical care can be done safely and privately when the bathroom or nurse’s office is not appropriate.
  • Access to water, food, sensory room, resting space, and restrooms as needed.
  • A place to store safe foods, formula, and medical supplies.
  • Full participation in all field trips and school activities with accommodations as needed.
  • Extra time for tests or classwork, and make-up support for any missed instruction.
  • No grade penalties for medical absences and plan for grade reporting when a student is behind on work due to disability.
  • Option to leave the classroom when triggered and go to the school counselor or social worker 
  • Designated parking space for student driver as required based on disability.
